“Mehmed the Conqueror and the Conquest” Panel Held on the 573rd Anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul

The panel titled “Mehmed the Conqueror and the Conquest”, organized by our Faculty to commemorate the 573rd anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul, was held at the Abdulkadir Ozulu Conference Hall.

The program began with a moment of silence and the singing of the Turkish National Anthem, followed by an opening address by our Dean, Prof. Dr. Zekeriya Işık. In his speech, the Dean emphasized the importance of students’ participation in such events and their involvement in preparing presentations based on research, noting that these activities make a significant contribution to the development of both their academic knowledge and self-confidence. He then provided insights into the extraordinary political, military, and intellectual character of Mehmed II (Fatih Sultan Mehmet), highlighting the significance of the Conquest of Istanbul in both Turkish and world history.

The panel was moderated by Research Assistant Abdullah Sami Sümer from the Department of History. The speakers included doctoral student Siti Maryamallynah Binti Musally and undergraduate students Uğur Aydıner and Berkay Emir Özden.

During the panel, Siti Maryamallynah Binti Musally presented an evaluation of the life and character of Mehmed II. Uğur Aydıner discussed the significance of the Conquest of Istanbul in Turkish and Islamic history, while Berkay Emir Özden provided information on the political and military preparations undertaken prior to the conquest.

At the conclusion of the event, which attracted considerable interest from both students and academic staff of our Faculty, Dean Prof. Dr. Zekeriya Işık presented certificates of appreciation to the moderator and speakers in recognition of their contributions.
